NewsPaper as we now know it traces its roots back to China at the beginning of the first millennium AD. (around 105 AD). Traditional Chinese records give the credit for its development to T'sai Lun - a government official during the time of the Han dynasty, who made paper by mixing finely chopped mulberry bark and hemp rags with water. In the 1200s, Europeans conquered some Islamic territory in Spain, and captured a paper mill. They learned to make paper, and within two hundred years paper was being used throughout Europe. As the demand for paper grew, the mills changed from the traditional method of using rags and cloth to using the fibre from trees as wood was less expensive and more abundant than cloth. In early New Zealand, there were no written records due to the inherent aural nature of the Maori language. However, with the arrival of colonialists, fibre from the native flax plant (Phormium tenax) has been used for papermaking. Currently it is used by artists and craftsmen producing handmade papers with a unique New Zealand characteristic. Although paper now may not be recognisable to the Pharaohs, paper has retained its essential characteristics down through the ages and today's diverse offerings remain as natural, essential and precious as ever.
